Previously, Colorado did not allow online gambling, but as of May 1, 2020 the state will allow online sports betting after passing a referendum in November 2019.
The Ameristar was granted its sports betting license in March 2020 and the license is active for two years. As of this writing it has not been announced who the Ameristar plans on partnering with for its online sports wagering.

Ameristar Sportsbook Black Hawk
Sports betting was legalized in Colorado after a referendum passed in 2019. Starting May 1, 2020 both onsite and online sports wagering will be allowed.
Ameristar has not announced who it will partner with to run both its in-person and online sportsbook. However, in January 2020 Penn National Gaming, which owns Ameristar, acquired a stake in Barstool Sports and plans on launching a Barstool Sportsbook brand in the near future.
PNG currently operates Hollywood Casino at Penn National in Pennsylvania. At Hollywood Casino, bettors can wager on just about every sport available at the casino’s retail sportsbook. The types of wagers they accept include straight bets, parlays, match-ups, futures, props, and in-play betting.
In Colorado, it appears likely that Ameristar will be able to accept bets on all those contests and possibly even more. Colorado has a Sports Betting Catalog that will include everything sportsbooks are able to take wagers on. The catalog is not available to the public yet, but the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission has stated the catalog is massive.
Ameristar obtained its sports betting license in March 2020.
Ameristar Casino overview
Ameristar Casino Black Hawk boosts 57,000 square feet of gaming space with 1,250 gaming machines, 40 table games, and a live poker room. When it opened in 2001, it was the largest casino in Colorado.
The Ameristar features skylight ceilings, slate floors, and timber beams throughout as well as huge floor-to-ceiling fireplaces, giving it a mountain lodge feel.

Slot machines
Ameristar has 1,250 slot and video poker machines. The most popular machines at the Ameristar are Buffalo Gold, Buffalo Grand, and Dragon Link. They feature all varieties of slots though, including interactive video slots, classic reel machines, and both single and multi-hand video poker.

Because of Colorado’s current gaming restrictions, poker, blackjack, craps, and roulette are the only table games permitted. Ameristar has 40 tables and features all four games. The casino also offers bonus craps.

The Ameristar Casino is part of the national mychoice loyalty program, which is used across Penn National Gaming casinos throughout the country. What that means is mychoice rewards that players earn at any PNG casino, such as the Tropicana Casino in Las Vegas, can be redeemed at other PNG casinos, like the Ameristar.
New mychoice members receive $30 in free play guaranteed. On their first visit, members get a complimentary $5, then $10 on their second visit, and $15 on their third. Mychoice members also have the chance to get up to $500 after those three visits.
When you play slots and table games with mychoice, you receive tier points and mycash. Tier points allow you to advance to the next membership level, while mycash can be redeemed for free playing, dining, shopping, or hotel stays.
In the casino, players accrue one tier point for every $5 of slot play, $10 of video poker, and $40 of electronic table game play. Players also earn one point for every $10 bet on horse racing. The amount of points players accrue from tradition table games varies based on the game, length of play, and average bet.
You also can earn points outside casinos, receiving one tier point for every $5 spent on dining, drinking, or retail purchases at participating outlets.

Ameristar Casino Black Hawk hotel amenities
Ameristar Casino, Resort & Spa features a 536-room hotel as well as a rooftop swimming pool, the only hotel pool in Black Hawk. The pool is open daily from 7 a.m.-9 p.m. for all guests. There also is an adult-only swim from 9-11 p.m. for all guests over the age of 18.
The spa experiences include massages, scrubs, facials, pedicures, and manicures. Guests of the hotel are able to use the Ameristar’s fitness center which has cardio and strength-training equipment.
Dining
Ameristar boasts the only Starbucks in Black Hawk, offers in-room dining for its hotel guests, and a plethora of other dining options to choose from.
- Timberline Grill: Steakhouse with decor that makes you feel like you’re in a Rocky Mountain cabin. Signature dishes include Alaskan halibut and roasted prime rib, they also offer a decadent 24k Chocolate Bar dessert.
- Centennial Buffet: Just steps from the casino floor, the buffet allows you to choose from Italian, Chinese, Mexican, or traditional American fare. There also is a dessert bar to indulge that sweet tooth.
- Fireside Kitchen: Offers a wide-variety of breakfast offerings as well as soups, salads, sandwiches, and burgers. And it wouldn’t be a fireside meal if they didn’t offer s’mores, which they do.
- Waypost Deli: Perfect for anyone looking for a quick bite. The menu features everything from a turkey Cobb salad to green chili smothered burritos or even something as simple as ham and Swiss sandwich.
- Bar 8042: Located in the middle of the casino, this bar also is now home to six additional blackjack tables.

Hotel history
The Ameristar Casino opened Dec. 20, 2001, and at the time, was the largest Colorado casino. At the time of its opening, it was known as the Black Hawk Casinoby Hyatt. By 2003 Hyatt Hotel’s management agreement was terminated and the name was changed to Mountain High Casino when Windsor Woodmont took over the operations.
Ameristar Casinos purchased it in 2004 and it was rebranded under its current name in 2006 after an $80-million renovation.

Even with only three of Indiana’s 10 casinos and racetracks accepting mobile sports betting for the first time, both the handle and taxable revenues in the Hoosier State increased dramatically as DraftKings, FanDuel, and BetRivers all conducted their first online transactions last month.
According to numbers released by the Indiana Gaming Commission, the state had a collective handle of just under $91.7 mm in October, a 160% increase from September’s in-person exclusive total of $35.2 mm. The result was tax revenue also rising sharply as $1,096,160 — a 34.8% increase from September — poured into the state’s coffers.
Both casinos closest to Chicago, Ameristar and Horseshoe Hammond, reported double-digit growth over their respective September handles. Mobile sports betting made a tremendous impact for Ameristar, which is aligned with DraftKings and accounted for more than half of Indiana’s overall handle with $46.1 mm.
That increase was greater than seven-fold from September’s retail-only total of $5.41 mm. Ameristar’s hold, however, plummeted from 23.6% to 10.89% in October. The impressive higher handle still resulted in a nearly threefold increase in Ameristar’s tax revenue to $477,434, which represented 43.6% of Indiana’s total tax revenue.
DraftKings’ early dominance
DraftKings, which went live in Indiana on Oct. 2, accounted for just over 85% of Ameristar’s overall handle with $39.3 mm. The online betting giant averaged a daily handle of $1.7 mm given the Indiana Gaming Commission measures its monthly total from the 24th to the 24th of each month before adjustments are made.
“The DraftKings digital sportsbook has been live in Indiana for just over a month, and fans in the state continue to gravitate toward our platform, which has combined personalization technology with special Indiana-specific boosts and promotions for a tailored experience,” said Matt Kalish, Chief Revenue Officer and Co-Founder of Draft Kings, in a statement. “Our early success is also a testament to Indiana regulators who have established a successful formula for the legal sports betting market to thrive.”
Horseshoe Hammond has yet to enter the mobile fray as it waits on corporate owner Caesars Sports to unveil its betting app. Still, Horseshoe reported an 18.9% increase on its handle to $10.68 mm and was the only other casino besides Ameristar to post an eight-figure handle. Like Ameristar, Hammond Horseshoe experienced a sharp dip in its hold from 23.16% in September to 16.07% in October.
The result was Horseshoe actually contributing less in tax revenue month-over-month, tailing off to $163,004 in October, 17.5% less than its September figure of $197,640.
The third Chicagoland area casino in Indiana, Majestic Star in Gary, recently entered an agreement to enter the sports betting market with USA Sports Gaming LLC of Oak Brook, Ill. The BetIndiana mobile sportsbook will launch upon approval from the Indiana Gaming Commission and be exclusively online, though it will team with Majestic Star to build a sports betting lounge where people can place wagers via personal devices.
